Haverford at a glance
Haverford is a small, historic Main Line community of about 6,500 people, centered on Haverford College and its arboretum. It has stone homes, mature trees, two rail lines, and some of the region’s most storied clubs. In ZIP 19041, Zillow’s typical single-family home value was about $1.55 million in August 2026.
Haverford is easy to confuse with Haverford Township, a much larger municipality next door. The community of Haverford spans two townships in two counties, so understanding the map is the first step.
Haverford versus Haverford Township
- Haverford (ZIP 19041) is an unincorporated community. Part of it is in Lower Merion Township (Montgomery County) and part is in Haverford Township (Delaware County).
- Haverford Township is a separate municipality of about 50,000 people. It includes all of Havertown and parts of Haverford, Ardmore, Wynnewood, and Bryn Mawr.
The community took its name from the older township after a postal address change in 1946.
Schools: check the address
| Side of Haverford | Township and county | School district |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Merion side | Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County | Lower Merion |
| Haverford Township side | Haverford Township, Delaware County | Haverford Township |
The Lower Merion School District has two high schools, Lower Merion High School in Ardmore and Harriton High School in Rosemont; assignment depends on the address. The School District of Haverford Township runs Haverford High School in Havertown.
Private schools are a major part of local life. The Haverford School, a boys’ school founded in 1884, is in Haverford, and The Baldwin School, The Shipley School, The Agnes Irwin School, and Episcopal Academy are all nearby.
Haverford College
Haverford College was founded in 1833 by Philadelphia Quakers and has about 1,400 undergraduates. Its entire 216-acre campus is an accredited arboretum, open to the public every day at no charge, with a 2.2-mile nature trail, a duck pond, and an 18-acre pinetum begun in 1929. For many residents, the trail is the daily walk.
Homes, clubs, and prices
Haverford’s housing includes historic stone homes and large estates, some designed by notable architects for Philadelphia’s Gilded Age families. Two National Historic Landmark clubs are close by: Merion Cricket Club, founded in 1865, and Merion Golf Club, whose East Course has hosted five U.S. Opens and is scheduled to host again in 2030.
In ZIP 19041, Zillow’s typical single-family home value was about $1.55 million in August 2026, up about 7.5 percent over the year. Across all home types, the least expensive third of homes was valued at about $605,000 and the most expensive third at about $2.24 million.
Getting around
- Haverford station, on SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Line, is about 9 miles from Suburban Station.
- Haverford South, on the Norristown High Speed Line (now the M), connects to 69th Street; it does not have accessible boarding.
- By car, Lancaster Avenue, Montgomery Avenue, and I-476 are the main routes. Without traffic, Center City is about 22 minutes away, King of Prussia about 19 minutes, and Bryn Mawr about 4 minutes.
Things to know before you buy
- Two townships, two counties. School district and county tax system depend on the address. Delaware County reassessed all properties in 2021, and Lower Merion raised its township tax rate in 2025 and 2026.
- Two Lower Merion high schools. On the Lower Merion side, confirm whether an address goes to Lower Merion or Harriton.
- Older homes. Historic stone houses have character and also real maintenance needs.
